Removal Tips - Packing Electronics

Posted on 30/05/2013

Electronics are often some of the most expensive items that a person owns, and in many cases the most cherished. Most people would be at a loss without their television or laptop, so it is important to keep them safe during a move. The following tips will help you keep your expensive electronics safe.CasesLaptops, net books and tablets can all be kept in a case or sleeve. These are often available separately and can range in price depending on material or brand. Covers can range from as little as £5 all the way to £50 for certain brands. The price does not necessarily guarantee quality so checking product reviews is advisable.  A fabric cover is unlikely to protect from impacts that may occurring during transit but will protect the casing of the gadget from scuffs and scratches.  A more sturdy covering made from plastic will help protect the items beyond scratches. Cases aren’t guaranteed to protect these items from damage but will provide a little extra protection when items are being packed together for a move. You may also find that the item you bought came with a case which will avoid you having to buy one separately. If this is the case make sure the holder offers the protection you require, as mentioned earlier if the attaché case is fabric and you need to protect against impacts you may need to purchase a more robust case. Screen protectorsScreen protectors are thin sheets of plastic you can place over LCD or touch screens.  They won’t protect your items from impacts but will protect the screen from marks and scratches. Screen protectors are useful in day to day life to preserve the screens on your gadgets but also prevent the signs of wear and tear while moving. If you are likely to pack numerous items with screens into a box without cases screen protectors offer a cost effect way of at least protecting the screen from unsightly blemishes. Screen protectors are readily available online and in electronic stores and vary in price from a few pence to pounds dependant on size and quantity. As with the cases your items may have come with screen protectors so always check the box the item came in.Use the original boxMost people will throw the box for most things away as soon as they have ripped the packaging off. The boxes items were packed in originally were made for the purpose of transporting the delicate electronic item inside. They often contain packaging like Styrofoam that has been shaped specifically for that item. This means you can place you laptop or tablet back into its box and use it for its intended purpose, transporting the item safely.  While people may throw them away immediately to avoid clutter, if saved the original box offers you the peace of mind that your items are unlikely to be broken while packing and moving electronics. Use packagingIf none of the above suggestions are useful for you the best advice available is to use packaging like Styrofoam, bubble wrap and paper in excess and cover your electronics to avoid damage. If you have to put laptops or tablets into a large box together wrap each one, preferably in bubble wrap, failing that lots of newspaper and surround in Styrofoam. This should hopefully protect from the items gaining scratches and avoid items being smashed or broken in transit.
