How to Properly Load and Unload the MV

Posted on 22/08/2012

If you find yourself needing to load and unload the Moving Vehicle on your own, you risk finding yourself in the really unpleasant situation of discovering that the moving van or even the lorry you hired cannot accommodate all your belongings. Relax, remember that you are not the first nor the last person to relocate, and read below to find out how to make everything fit into the Moving Vehicle.

When size matters

One of the first things to do when planning your relocation is to decide upon how big a vehicle you need to hire on your moving day. Here comes the bronze rule of using the Moving Vehicle: choose the Moving Vehicle early, and don't think too much about it! Really, the math is not that complicated - if you have a residence of two or fewer rooms, a pick-up truck is enough; if you have a three or four-room place, find a moving van; and if you were lucky enough to have five or more rooms at your disposal, you definitely need a moving lorry. Of course if you own an enormous cupboard or a piano, or something else extremely space-consuming, you fall out of your category and jump into the next. Upon choosing your Moving Vehicle, measure and write down the dimensions of the cargo space, and don't think about it further.

Preparation is important, too

To prepare your items for the transportation is easy, if performed alongside the packing. Disassemble only what doesn't fit in the vehicle, and only that part of the furniture that exceeds the allowed height and/or width - don't be swayed away disassembling! Then we come to the silver rule on Moving Vehicle use: Pad, pad and pad. Pad the protruding parts of the furniture (the legs of tables and chairs, the grips and handles of cabinets and so on), so they don't damage other furniture or any moving boxes. The vital part of the preparation is the preparation of the Moving Vehicle - pad the bottom of the cargo space with woolen rugs or other soft coverings, and part of the side walls too, if possible. Then prepare some more padding for between the biggest or the most fragile items.

Loading lecture

What is vital when loading the Moving Vehicle is the balance between three issues. First, you have to pay attention to the literal balance of the Moving Vehicle. That is, to load the heaviest items first, and near to the front wall of the cargo space, so their collective weight falls as far forward as possible; and then you have to always load the left and right side of the Moving Vehicle equally, so the Moving Vehicle is stable. Then you should pay attention to what goes in first and last, so the unloading is easier. And finally you have to follow the golden rule of using the Moving Vehicle properly: use the entire height and width of the Moving Vehicle. What makes this rule golden is its effectiveness. Because only by implementing it you can you avoid the unpleasant situation described earlier and discover that your Moving Vehicle is too small for your needs. But really, if you stack each item properly on top of one another, you will be amazed how much space can be spared. So just follow the golden rule, then everything else mentioned, and don't worry too much.

Unloading made simple

How do you unload the Moving Vehicle? Easy. Start with what you see first when you open the doors of the cargo space, and work top to bottom and front to back. In the perfect situation you should have a nice furniture layout plan, drawn by yourself, and you can find a room in which no big and heavy furniture will be placed, like the kitchen or the children's room. Then you can use that room to temporally accommodate the smaller boxes and pieces of furniture, so they don't obstruct the maneuvering in the corridors and the other rooms. After the big furniture is finally unloaded and put in place, you can start distributing everything else in place around it.
