How To Downsize Your Kitchen When Moving To A Smaller Property

Posted on 17/04/2014

Sometimes it is necessary for people to downsize home, there are many factors for such a move, this could be due to financial reasons, your children have moved out of the family home and you just don’t need the space or you are moving to a more affluent area and a smaller property is all you can afford. Here are some tips and helpful advice when downsizing your kitchen. 1.    We all collect gadgets and kitchen equipment over the years that we rarely ever or never use, the truth is you can make the same delicious meals with the basic cooking equipment. When downsizing it is important to choose a few important appliances, what you use on a daily basis and what you can live without, how many times have you used that coffee machine at the back of the cupboard for example, obviously items such as kettles, toasters and maybe microwaves are a must, but really consider what you can live without. 2.    It is worth taking account all the glasses and dishes that you never use that are just stacking up in your cupboards taking up space, it may be worth getting rid of all you mismatched dinner ware as they will not be a stackable as a matching set, if you have one good set of matching dinner service then this should be enough, even if you are having dinner parties. 3.    If you kitchen equipment are old and bulky it may be worth investing in new space saving equipment, there are numerous multi functioning kitchen wares with many items that are conveniently stackable or foldable ensuring extra space. 4.    If you lack space within your cupboards or draws in your new home then it may be worth buying storage space that can be hung on the wall, shelving is a good option also magnetic strips can be hung for all your metal utensils’, this will save space and be easy to find. 5.    If you have a tumble dryer and washing machine, it may be worth invested in anew twin one machine that will do the same job has both machines but will save space due to the fact that you only need the one space in your kitchen. 6.    The same principles can apply when considering appliances such as, mini overs and micro waves, you can purchase microwave ovens that also have grills and fan ovens built in. This can be applies to numerous items around the home, you can purchase a vacuum cleaner that is also a carpet cleaner or steamer, this also saving save, and with the new technology generally such appliances that have multi functions’ facilities are smaller than old fashion bulker kitchen appliances. So more space is saved! 7.    Instead of having numerous bowls for numerous food just downsize to one or two, you will not really need numerous bowls for salad, mixing, fruits etc., just keep one or two good solid bowls, that can be stacked for all your kitchen needs, and when not in use bigger bowls are ideal for storing your onions, potatoes, fruit or veg. 8.    Do not over shop for food items, only shop for what you need for that day or over the next few days if you cannot go and buy fresh fruit and vegetables on a daily basis, this will not only save on space, but save money as you only be consuming what you have purchased and not over purchased so there will be less waste, this is also a good idea if you are on a diet or plan to lose weight as you will only be shopping for the necessary items due to space.
