Protecting Yourself Against Removal Day Disasters

Posted on 27/02/2014

The process of moving house is a big one, and it is not without its issues. If you are concerned that there will be problems that you may encounter at the last minute, then it is extremely advisable to get them sorted well in advance, to ensure that you are not stuck in a situation that you can’t get out of without spending huge amounts of money! The varying complexities that come with the removals process will mean that you need to be wary of the issues that can arise, as they can sometimes seem like they have come from nowhere! If you are not even sure as to what you are up against, then a little advice on the matter can be useful! The tips that follow are to give you a rough idea of some of the issues that you may face, but you should talk to your removals company about such things, to ensure that you are on the right track for your specific removal. Given that there are so many of your precious items being transported, the first place to think about protecting yourself, is in their safety. Content insurance for your house is most likely void when you are moving, so have you got removal insurance? Your removals company may offer this as an extra, but some only do so when they have done the packing. In these cases, a packing service can be a great way to ensure that everything remains in one piece, but it is rather expensive! Do some research to see whether any outsider firms will cover you against damage to your valuables whilst you are in transit, as it could be extremely useful; think about the cost of a dropped television! There are other things that can sting you without you seeing it coming, things like putting down your deposit on a removals company and then finding that the other party has moved the exchange day, so that you need to re-book the removals team! This is a huge waste, as you will likely have put down a fair amount of cash in that very deposit! Some companies offer a system by which you put down a small amount of money to cover a few days, which is then removed from the deposit amount when you do settle on the exact one. This means that you don’t have to wait until just before the move to confirm your removals firm booking, as this may mean that you lose out on the company that you would have liked to use. There are problems of a similar nature that can occur with the actual day of the move. When you are exchanging on a property, you will be relying on your money going through to the other party in time that their estate agent can release the keys for the new place. You will also be relying on the other party vacating your new place in time for you to get in there and start unloading. If there are any problems with either of these situations, or you have to wait for any other reason; you will be being charged waiting times by the removals team, as they cannot work until you can get in to the new place. It is essential therefore that you find out how much these charges are, and whether you can cover yourself against them with a down payment. Some companies will not do this, but some have systems for exactly such occasions.
